Bob Ross Early life
Bob Ross was born Robert Norman Ross in Daytona Beach, Florida, on October 29, 1942. Ollie, his mother, worked as a waitress, and Jack, his father, was a carpenter.
Bob grew up in Orlando and spent his childhood caring for injured animals. On “The Joy of Painting,” he claimed that he has a half-brother named Jim.
Ross dropped out of school in ninth grade to work with his father as a carpenter, and while working as a carpenter, he lost part of his left index finger in a “freak saw accident.”
In 1961, Bob joined the United States Air Force and was assigned to the role of medical records technician.
He rose through the ranks to become a master sergeant, and he was the clinic’s first sergeant at Alaska’s Eielson Air Force Base.
During his free time, he enjoyed painting, and it was during his time in the Air Force that he perfected the rapid wet-on-wet painting method for which he became famous.
Ross was “the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the one who makes you make your bed, the man who screams at you for being late to work” while serving in the military, so when he left in 1981, he promised to never raise his voice again.

Ross found German painter Bill Alexander’s television show “The Magic of Oil Painting” while working part-time as a bartender.
The series introduced Bob to the alla prima (which means “first attempt”) wet-on-wet technique, which allowed him to complete a painting in under 30 minutes.
Ross went on to paint Alaskan landscapes on novelty gold-mining pans after mastering that method, eventually earning more money from his art than from his Air Force employment.
After returning to Florida, Bob studied with Alexander and went on to work for the Alexander Magic Art Supplies Company as a teacher and travelling salesperson.
A woman who attended one of Ross’ sessions persuaded Bob that he was talented enough to succeed without Alexander, and she, Ross, and Bob’s wife, Jane, combined their money to become Bob Ross Inc. “The Joy of Painting” premiered on January 11, 1983, and ran for 31 seasons with 403 episodes.
Before his death at the age of 52, Bob Ross made an estimated 30,000 paintings, and the Bob Ross Workshop and Gallery in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, offers training on his famed technique for those who want to become Certified Ross Instructors.
Bob Ross Inc. also provides painting classes in cities around the United States, with “more than 1500 Bob Ross Teachers [doing] local workshops every day,” according to the official website. Actor David Arquette is one of the most well-known Certified Ross Instructors.
Personal life
On May 28, 1965, Bob married Vivian Ridge, and the couple had a son named Steve before divorcing in 1977. Steve is a Certified Ross Instructor and has appeared on his father’s show on occasion.
On April 22, 1977, Bob married his second wife, Jane, and the two stayed married until Jane’s death from cancer in 1992. Ross married Lynda Brown three months before his death on April 7, 1995.

Death and Enduring Legacy
Ross smoked cigarettes for most of his life and died of lymphoma complications on July 4, 1995, in Orlando, Florida.
His plaque reads, “Bob Ross, Television Artist,” and he was buried next to his parents at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The provisions of Bob Ross Inc.’s incorporation indicate that if any of the company’s partners dies, their stock will be distributed evenly among the other partners.
Following Bob’s and Jane’s deaths, Annette and Walt Kowalski were given sole ownership of Bob Ross Inc. The Kowalskis allegedly sought to persuade Ross to give them the rights to his inheritance, but he instead bequeathed the estate to his son Steve and his half-brother, Jimmie Cox, along with his “name, likeness, voice, and visual, written, or otherwise recorded work.”
Bob’s “art, all finished paintings, work copies used in the production of Bob Ross’s final paintings, and all paints, brushes, easels, canvases, and other supplies, materials, and instruments utilised by Bob Ross” were the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Kowalskis.
They then filed a lawsuit for attorney fees, damages, lost earnings, and other costs. The litigation were settled in the Kowalskis’ favour in 1997, and their daughter, Joan, took over Bob Ross Inc. after they retired in 2012.
Bob’s likeness has appeared in films and television shows such as “Family Guy,” “Deadpool,” and the web series “Epic Rap Battles of History.”
Ross was honoured with a Google Doodle on what would have been his 70th birthday, and he is the topic of the board game “Bob Ross: The Art of Chill.” Twitch had a nine-day “The Joy of Painting” marathon in 2015, which drew 5.6 million views, while Netflix started streaming “Beauty Is Everywhere” in 2016, which contains episodes from seasons 20–22 of “The Joy of Painting.”
The Kowalskis then created a Bob Ross YouTube account, which currently has over 4.9 million subscribers. A number of Bob’s paintings, a stepladder he used on “The Joy of Painting,” and two notebooks he used during the early years of the series were acquired by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2019.
