Ira Glasser was a Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, born April 18, 1938. He studied mathematics and was a teacher at City University in New York and Sarah Lawrence College before becoming an associate editor and editor of Current, a monthly magazine about public affairs.

Early Career

Glasser was a mathematics professor at Queens College, CUNY, and Sarah Lawrence College in the 1960s. He was editor of Current magazine from 1963 to 1967. Glasser  appointed associate director of the New York Civil Liberties Union in 1967. He  appointed the NYCLU’s executive Director in 1970. In that capacity, he served until 1978 when he  elected the American Civil Liberties Union’s executive director.

Glasser  credited by the ACLU with turning the American Civil Liberties Union from a “mom-and-pop”-style operation based mainly in a handful of large cities into a national civil liberties powerhouse. ” The ACLU had offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico by Glasser’s end. In 1978, about half of states had offices. Glasser increased the ACLU’s annual income by doubling it from $4 million in 1978, to $45 million in 1999.

While the ACLU has protected civil liberties through litigation generally, Glasser expanded its focus through lobbying (four) Glasser retired from the ACLU in 2001. He  succeeded by Anthony D. Romero as executive director. Glasser is the chairman of the board for the Drug Policy Alliance in his retirement.
