Sephora added over one million customers to Kohl’s since the announcement of the partnership. The partnership may not have reached all its goals but it is a good start.

These two companies collaborated to create a better shopping experience for Sephora customers.

The partnership includes the addition of a range of high-end beauty brands to Kohl’s as well as expanding the selection of fragrance products.

Sephora and Kohl’s will also collaborate to develop curated collections. These collections will include items from Sephora’s private label, the Sephora Collection, as well as a variety of makeup brands.

Kohl’s reported a 3.4% increase of SG&A in the second quarter as a result. However, its overall revenue dropped 8.1%. That’s a small change compared to the 7.7% decline in comparable sales. The company said that they were still experiencing strength in all areas.

Adding six new prestige beauty brands

Sephora at Kohl’s will be adding six premium beauty brands this spring to its collection. These brands are Murad and Living Proof as well as Voluspa, Charlotte Tilbury (NARS), and Clarins.

The new brands join existing prestige beauty brands such as Clinique, Kiehl’s, and Nars, all of which will continue to be sold at Kohl’s. These six additions will bring the total to 125 prestige brands offered in Sephora at Kohl’s.

Each Sephora at Kohl’s shop will offer a curated selection of prestige brands in a 2,500-square-foot space. There will be a discovery and testing area.

Even though the Sephora at Kohl’s model is new, Kohl’s has seen impressive growth from the store.

According to Kohl’s, the stores have helped bring in more people and driven cross-category purchase.

Sephora stores at Kohls are on pace to increase their number by 850 by 2023. The retailer has plans to open 400 additional stores this year.

Shop-in-shops in select stores

It’s not often that a major retailer tacks on a shop-in-shop to your shopping experience, much less has a display of the trinity.

It’s not as easy to walk into your favourite department store but it’s a much easier way than having your things shipped across town.

JCPenney partnership

Sephora announced a partnership with Kohl’s. Kohl’s claims that their plans to open up to 850 Sephora retail shops within Kohl’s stores between 2023 and 2023 will boost Kohl’s bottom line by more than $1B.

These shops measure 2,500 square footage and sell full-line Sephora merchandise.

They will be located in 200 Kohl’s locations, with plans to expand to 400 more by the end of the year.

By partnering with the popular retailer, Sephora hopes to re-establish a presence in suburban areas.

The shop-in shops complement the company’s mall-based stores.

Penney’s has approximately 650 Sephora locations. Many stores in Penney’s were shuttered during the Pandemic.

A few of them have since reopened. Sephora was one of the few companies that had options when JC Penney declared bankruptcy.

One option was to terminate its agreement with Penney early. Penney countered that Sephora had tried to end its agreement with Penney before the pandemic struck, even though it was fully compliant. Sephora denied the claim.

You could also build mini Sephora shops in selected Target and Kohl’s stores. Similar to mini Starbucks in Target’s stores, this would work.
