Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge: Medical Risks and Societal Implications Explained

Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge: Against medical advice and all logic, you’ve just taken the Kylie Jenner Challenge — artificially plumping your lips to look more like the 17-year-old reality television star, daughter of Bruce Jenner and Kris Jenner (formerly Kris Kardashian; mother to Kim and Kourtney Kardashian among other Kardashians).

Take the Kylie Jenner Challenge with a shot glass, just as people did with the Ice Bucket Challenge – though this time with caution!

Emily Orofino of Pop Sugar reported that “very young girls — significantly younger than Kylie, who is only 17! — are taking part.” After placing their lips into a shot glass, they suck air out and create friction but because the glass is not flexible it can break under all that pressure leading to serious injuries that require stitches to repair.”

Critics of Kylie Jenner’s challenge range from doctors to celebrities

Dendy Engelman, a dermatologic surgeon, expressed her concern over the growing trend of DIY lip plumping. Not only can these suction techniques cause significant pain, swelling and bruising but there’s also the risk of scarring or permanent disfigurement with repeated attempts.

On the other hand, some criticize women — particularly young women–for altering their bodies in painful and potentially hazardous ways to conform to Hollywood’s ideal of what a woman should look like.

“I am against body modification of any kind,” Orofino, who chose to “plump her pout” with CandyLipz, wrote. “I also strongly oppose young women who are still developing (physically or mentally) making irresponsible decisions that could permanently alter their looks. If you want to try this big-lip trend, I recommend overlining your mouth with lipliner (that’s what Kylie Jenner does!).”

Finally, some criticize women who attempt to mimic the features of white girls with big lips — often seen among black women targeted by racists — as an act of racism.

One Twitter user said, “Don’t forget the features they tried to teach you to despise.”

Kylie Jenner did not respond to a request for comment when asked about her pillow lips, which are said to be natural.

“I just tell people to stop talking about my lips,” Kylie shared with Britain’s Grazia Daily. “I haven’t had plastic surgery. People always flashback to pictures when I was 12 and say ‘Kylie looks so different!’ but how can that be the same from 12-18?”

Could the challenge be one that should not be taken?

“Kylie Jenner herself has stated that she won’t take part in the Kylie Jenner Challenge,” the Inquisitr questioned. “So what is everyone involved doing to themselves?”
