Mary Kay Letourneau (Highline School District, Burien) was an extremely respected teacher. Her first child was due when she was arrested for second-degree sexual abuse of a child.

The national discussion erupted over her arrest. After being released on bail, she gave birth to her first daughter. But she soon found herself back in prison. In the end, she was remanded to jail.

2004 was the year that a judge issued a no contact order. Letourneau had to stop contacting Vili Fualaau and any of their children. Letourneau must also be prohibited from having contact unsupervised with any minor.

Letourneau had been a college student at Arizona State University when the couple met once again. The relationship was one of convenience. However, the attraction was only physical.

Letourneau was later arrested for rape. She was actually having sex in public with a 12 year-old boy.

After pleading guilty, she was sentenced at six months jail. The deal allowed her to get a no-contact order. Although, she continued to be a sex offender until her death.

According to the Los Angeles Times, physical abuse and emotional abuse were alleged. The couple was also reportedly involved in a car sex affair.

Convictions

Mary Kay Letourneau is a former schoolteacher who was charged in 1997 for the rape and sex abuse of a 12 year-old boy. She pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape.

Fualaau was also sent more than 20 messages before Letourneau got out of prison. He also received more than 20 letters from her.

Fualaau and Letourneau were active in the lives their children. Letourneau took custody of both. Letourneau enjoyed her role as mother and loved watching her child mature.

Letourneau was sent to a treatment program. Julia Moore, Letourneau’s doctor, diagnosed her as having bipolar disorder. It is also called manic depression.
