Kang was born in Clarkston Georgia, to South Korean immigrants. He moved to Gainesville, Georgia, where he lived for a while. He was raised by his Korean mother and African American stepfather, who were both from the same country. Five years after high school, he moved to Barstow, CA.

Kang went to school at the University of California, Riverside.

In college, he chose acting over law school because his parents were worried about how few Asian Americans were on TV and how hard it was to get a job in America.

Better Luck Tomorrow (2002) was his first big role. He played Han Lue, a gang member who was very aloof. They made The Motel, which was one of the best movies of all time. He played Sam Kim in the movie.

He played Han Lue in the Fast and the Furious movies. He was in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, and more. Han was first seen as a one-off in an almost straight-to-DVD release. He was brought back by the director, Justin Lin, who made Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, F9, and the short film, Los Bandoleros a hit with fans.

When Jet Li made War, he starred as an FBI agent. In the movie Forbidden Warrior, he was a son of Genghis Khan. As Detective Taylor Kwon, he played a small role in the action movie Live Free or Die Hard. He also starred in the movie Bullet to the Head with Sylvester Stallone in 2013.

Kang has starred in a lot of TV shows, including the Korean drama parody “Tae Do (Attitudes and Feelings, Both Desirable and Sometimes Secretive)” with Bobby Lee on MADtv. He played the narcissistic President Gin Kew Yun Chun Yew Nee on a regular basis. He played FBI agent Tae Kim in the short-lived FOX show Gang Related.

It was important for him to be able to speak Korean, which he is good at. Chris Morgan, who made the Fast & Furious movies, wrote the character Tae Kim just for him, because he had worked on them.

Kang started a YouTube channel called “Sung’s Garage” in January 2020. It holds the videos for the podcast of the same name, which Kang also hosts on YouTube.
