Nearly one year ago, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron revealed to Rolling Stone that Cruise had been approached to portray a variant of Tony Stark in the 2022 film.
Tom Cruise: Could He Be the Next Iron Man? In response to years of rumor, Tom Cruise recently admitted in an interview with podcast Phase Zero that he wasn’t close to landing the role, as reported by People magazine.
“No,” Robert Downey Jr. assured Rolling Stone that Cruise had been cast to play Tony Stark in the 2022 film. This revelation came nearly one year after Michael Waldron revealed to Rolling Stone that Cruise had been approached about playing a variant of Stark in the project.
Fans were already spreading the rumor that Tom Cruise was being considered for the original Iron Man role, which Downey Jr took on in 2008 to launch Marvel Studios Universe.
“That was totally made up,” Waldron said of online rumours regarding Cruise. “No cut footage exists. But I adore Tom Cruise – so much so that when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige asked if we could get Tom Cruise as Iron Man back then, I said yes!”
“Back then,” Ain’t It Cool News reported at one point about Tom Cruise being considered for Iron Man was going around,” Waldron continued, “And yet,”
He laughed, “When it started being talked about online, I was like, ‘Yeah that would be cool!'” Waldron assured that no one reached out to him “because of availability.
” The star, who has played Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes (aka War Machine) since joining Iron Man 2’s cast 12 years ago, noted: “I’ve kind of grown up with this cast who I really have fun with over these past 12 years.”
